2nd US Colored Light Artillery

In the USCT, there was only one regiment of Light Artillery organized - the 2nd US Colored Light Artillery Regiment. This Regiment was composed of nine separate Batteries grouped into three nominal battalions of three batteries each. The batteries were usually detached.

    • I Battalion: A,B & C Batteries.

    • II Battalion: D, E & F Batteries.

    • III Battalion: G, H & I Batteries.

Nine men from Williamson County served in the 2nd Light Artillery (Colored). All were born in Williamson County, Tennessee. Five of the men enlisted in Nashville. The remaining four enlisted in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. It is likely these men were sold or taken to these other slave states sometime after their birth in Tennessee

Battery A

  • Cpl. Peter Battle enlisted at Nashville on April 2, 1864. He was born in Williamson County around 1845. He died in Wilson Hospital Nashville on Feb 15, 1865 of pneumonia.

  • Pvt. Henry Berry enlisted at Nashville on April 2, 1864. He was born in Williamson County around 1846. He mustered out with the regiment June 13, 1866 in Nashville.

  • Pvt. Samuel Covington enlisted at Nashville on September 16, 1864. He was born in Williamson County around 1844. He mustered out with the regiment June 13, 1866 in Nashville.

  • Pvt. Mack Petway enlisted at Nashville on April 2, 1864. He was born in Williamson County around 1846. He mustered out with the regiment June 13, 1866 in Nashville.

  • Pvt. Harvey Willington enlisted at Nashville on April 2, 1864. He was born in Williamson County around 1839. He was a blacksmith. He died in USA Hospital No. 16 Nashville, Tenn. on March 23, 1864 of typhoid fever. His name appears on the Roll of Honor of unknowns at the Nashville National Cemetery.

Battery C

  • Pvt. Richard (Richmond) Walden enlisted at the Black River Bridge in Mississippi on October 26, 1863. He was born in Williamson County around 1843. He mustered out Dec. 28, 1865 in Vicksburg, Mississippi.


Battery D

  • Pvt. Peter Boyd enlisted at Goodrich Landing, Louisiana on September 1, 1864. He was born in Franklin around 1864. Transferred to the 101st USCI Invalid Corp.


Battery E

  • Pvt. Alfred (Albert) Carter enlisted on February 9, 1864 in Helena, Arkansas. He was born in Williamson County around 1842. He died in hospital in Helena, Arkansas of pneumonia on April 26, 1865
